The nose is funky, but don't let that put you off. It's raw, natural, slightly sour cherry and earthy...

Populis is about bringing forward and fun natural wines to the people

Populis was a label born of a collective of four young growers who had travelled the world for their wine education and worked at some great European wineries. They decided to make wines for everyday drinking – hence Populis - that paid homage to their love of Mediterranean and Italian wines, with a Cali twist (using grapes such as Zinfandel, Carignane, Valdigue etc).  But they also wanted to work with some of the best vineyards in Cali. They identified the material they were looking for in Mendocino – 60-80 year vines which had dry-farmed organically by third and fourth generation growers. They decided to blend from different sites, but also to make the wine in such a way as to bring out the quality of the fruit. This is minimalist winemaking to say the least: wild ferment, unfiltered red and whites with little or no sulphur.


4 became 2 – Populis is now Diego Roig and Shaunt Oungoulian. The wines are as good as ever, pure and refreshing.

  • Grapes

    Cabernet Franc, Carignan, Syrah, Zinfandel

    'Wabi-Sabi' refers to the creation of something beautiful from things that are imperfect in some way.


    This red blend from Populis is an attempt to do just that with an unconventional mix from Mendocino of Carignane, Syrah, and Zinfandel made from 20-70 year-old vines.

    Mendocino County and Sierra Foothills, California, USA

    Warm Mediterranean climate

    Containing a mixture of sandstone, shale and quartz, the deep, well drained soils of Mendocino were formed from alluvial flows, depositing fist-sized stones along the way.


    Highly deficient in organic matter, the moderately acidic soil pH allows for optimal nutrient uptake to allow the vines to thrive.

  • Viticulture


    Shaunt and Diego farm several old-vine vineyards in Northern California.

    The grapes they farm go directly into Populis.


    The farming is top notch with no herbicides or pesticides.


    Vines range in age from 20 to 70 years.

    • Manual harvest

    • Part whole bunch, part destemmed

    • Co-fermented in tank

    • Pressing/maceration – see above

    • Indigenous yeast / Ambient ferment

    • Pressed after 12 days (after primary ferment)

    • Nature of maturation – aged in 60 gallon French oak barrels (used)

    • Malolactic in barrel

    • No Filtration

    • No Fining

    • SO2 added at bottling (small amount)
