Producer Profile

Dandelion Vineyards is the venture of self-titled ‘typist’ Zar Brooks and his winemaking wife Elena, with wines made from the Barossa and Eden Valleys, Fleurieu, the Adelaide Hills and McLaren Vale.
Nick Stock, one of Australia’s leading journalists, has described Dandelion as follows: “Brooks has teamed up with his winemaking wife Elena, a woman whose talents are outweighed only by her tolerance, in an exciting new venture called Dandelion Vineyards. The approach is remarkably simple and sees Elena making wine from a suite of beautiful old vineyards across that blessed curve that runs from the Barossa, up through the Eden Valley and Adelaide Hills and down into McLaren Vale.” As a young girl in Bulgaria, Elena’s mother worked in a winery. The demise of the Soviet Republic opened the door to an influx of westerners interested in the age-old history of wine making in these former states. Many Australians visited and stayed at the winery and as the only one able to speak English, Elena started helping translate after school. By the age of 12, she was interpreting barrel tastings with the winemakers. By the age of 15, she had the wine knowledge and vocabulary of a veteran, and by 16 she was making her first batches of Chardonnay.

Grape

Riesling is an aromatic white grape variety that orginates from the Rhine region of Germany and thrives in cool vineyards around the world especially in Canada, Oregon, Eden and Clare Valley Australia and New Zealand. It has a naturaly high acidity that helps the wine age gracefully and can be made in numerous styles from dry, off-dry, sweet or sparkling.

Region

The Eden Valley region is located north-east of the city of Adelaide and just east of the Barossa Valley. Overall growing season temperatures are significantly lower than those of the Barossa Valley, and the final stages of ripening and harvesting take place in much cooler conditions. The main varieties grown in the region are Riesling, Shiraz, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Its Reisling have strong lime juice aromas with great intensity of flavour on the palate. As the wines age, marmalade and toasty nuances appear on nose and palate.

Viticulture

Dandelion Vineyards are proven plantings that have stood the test of time. Our wish is to nurture the unique character of these vineyards and express their terroir in our wines.
Capturing variety, vintage and vineyard requires an enlightened approach and although vignerons see the Devil in every weed, we encourage the humble Dandelion amongst the vines as they suppress winter weeds, provide mulch in summer, and proffer their Wishing Clocks in spring to blow off and make our wish come true.

Vinification

Our Enchanted Garden is a thriving 7 acres Eden Valley Vine Garden. Whole bunches were hand-picked in the first week of March then de-stemmed without crushing the fruit to fill our press exactly. Juice from the free run was fermented in a small tank between 11 and 13 degrees Celcius. The wine has a high level of natural acidity, 7.8 grams per litre, a pH of 2.96 and although bone dry, only 11% alcohol.

This 2021 Enchanted Garden of the Eden Valley Riesling was bottled directly with minimal winemaking artifact to capture the essence of the vineyard, a looking glass if you will, and is ready to drink immediately or cellar for decades.
