Grape
Montepulciano is a red wine grape grown widely in central Italy, most notably its eastern Abruzzo, Marche and Molise regions. However, it is not planted in Montepulciano in southern Tuscany (see below). The variety is used mainly to produce dry red wines. A notable exception can be found in the lighter, cherry colored Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo. Montepulciano wines are globally appreciated for their soft flavors and strong color pigments. Gentle tannins and a low acidity create a medium bodied wine that is typically best consumed soon after bottling.
Region
Abruzzo is an Italian wine region on the east (Adriatic) coast. Its immediate neighbors in central Italy are Marche to the north, Lazio to the west and southwest and Molise to the southeast. The geographical makeup of Abruzzo is quite remarkable. A rugged, mountainous region with a lengthy coastline, its lush, green landscape is scattered with national parks and forests. Abruzzo is ideally situated between the Adriatic sea to the east, and the Apennine mountain range and the Maiella massif to the west. The region is home to Gran Sasso, one of Italy's highest peaks at 2912m (9554ft).
